Who Are You, Really? The Art of Creating Yourself

Writer's picture: Nikki WoutersNikki Wouters
What comes up when you hear the question: "Who are you?"

Do you start by thinking about your job or role in your family?

Teacher, coach, artist…

Sister, lover, friend....

Do you define yourself by your passions and what you care about?

Women's rights, environmental sustainability… Financial independence, travel...

Or maybe by the labels others have placed on you?

Funny, pretty, smart, brave, eccentric...

Take a moment (or two)... Write down what comes up for you.

Now ask yourself:

✨ What have I made that mean about my present and future?

✨ How much do I believe I have the power to change this? ✨ Is this influencing how I show up - and am I okay with that?

Who Are You, Really? The Art of Creating Yourself Blog Nikki Wouters

Our identity is something that we are all building whether we realise it or not - and it becomes the compass through which we navigate the world.

Crafted over the course of our life and influenced in many ways (nature to nurture) it is an artwork that shows where we've been and also influences where we go next.

Do you like what you see? Do you despair at some of the messy strokes and clumsy composition? Do you wonder...what could it become with the right steps?

Just like a piece of art - who we are can be altered, changed and elevated. This is the art of creating yourself.

We do this work of change and elevation not because you're not good enough and definitely not to fit anyone else's idea of what a good self - good life - good piece of art is...but because there are so many wonderful parts of you waiting to be shown to the world.

The Art of Creating Yourself

Time and time again, I’ve seen it in my own life and in my clients: right before real transformation happens, there’s a moment of willingness - a decision to step into creative courage.

✨ To see the potential beyond the present version of yourself.

✨ To claim your power in shaping your own story.

✨ To say yes to the big, bold, beautiful life calling your name.

But I get it too, how sometimes it’s hard to fully believe in what’s possible for us. Or, we are so stuck in who we are now (or have been in the past) that to truly believe there can be a whole new way of Being is challenging.

That’s why one of my favourite ways to bridge that gap is through guided visualisations - like this one I've created where you meet your future self and receive their advice.

This simple but powerful practice helps you connect with the version of you who has already stepped into their next chapter - who already knows what’s possible.

If you’ve been struggling to shift into a more empowered mindset or believe in your capacity for change, I highly recommend trying it. (And then letting me know how it went.)
