3 Reasons why your marketing isn’t working

You are in business - which means marketing is an area you need to get better at.

Now, of course you can hire someone to do this.

Or, you can sign up for a course or program to learn how.

But for many of us (especially at the start) this aspect of business falls squarely on our shoulders because you don’t have the time, resources or capacity to do the above.

Don’t stress! (And don’t listen to those marketing gurus out there who tell you that you NEED TO pay for ads or agencies right now.)

At the end of the day marketing is about communicating your services to those that need it and in a way that’s going to let them know it’s for them. Regardless of what business you are in that will be true.

So let’s go over the 3 Reasons why your marketing isn’t working and 1 new thing to try.

#1 You don’t believe anyone is listening

Gasp! Did I just call you out? ;)

If you are creating content (aka marketing yourself) and you hold a belief that no one cares and no one is listening…that shows up in what you are creating.

  • Energetically, the vibe isn’t right and the messages aren't going to land the way they need to.

  • Mentally, even if someone does respond you are more likely to ignore it or talk yourself out of it than to take the leap.

  • Emotionally, you will find yourself building resistance to creating and communicating because it just brings up too many icky emotions.

#2 You are doing what you ‘should’ do

Throughout your business journey you will come across a million ideas and more often than not there will be a trend going around about what you ‘should’ be doing with you marketing.

Jumping on a trend just because it sounds good isn’t going to help. It may also not align with the rest of your marketing and services which will create more confusion for you and any potential clients out there who are seeing it.

#3 You are looking for gaps rather than the gold

Even with a strategy that hasn’t been perfected there will be parts of it that work, or that are heading in the direction that will work. If you look at your marketing with a critical eye and ONLY see the messy parts you will miss out on opportunities.

An example of looking for the gap that may resonate:

You put out a post and only ONE person responds! So you like their comment, moan about how no one cares and you must have done something wrong and write another one.

What looking for the golf looks like in that same situation:

OMG! This resonate with ‘Sarah’! I am going to get curious about why and maybe even send her a DM because maybe I can help her some more.

And now let’s look at 1 new thing you can try.

  1. Spend up to 30 minutes scrolling through social media with the intention to assess how others are marketing and only take note of the ones you enjoy and can see yourself doing.

  2. Take the time necessary to actually consider whether it matches you, your services, your brand and your customers.

  3. Then make a commitment to show up with the same energy or strategy for a week.
