3 questions to ask before creating a new product or service in your business

That's quite a lengthy title however I know how important it is for business owners to get this one right!

As a multi passionate, highly creative and cosmic level idea generator this comes up ALL THE TIME for me - and I'm willing to bet it comes up a lot for you as well.

BTW: Having an abundance of ideas in business is never a bad thing.

So let's begin by removing any resentment or resistance to the fact that you have so many ideas but not enough time, capacity, energy or resources to create them.

But why are we talking about ideas when the topic is creating products and services? The simple answer is sometimes the only reason you are creating a product or service is because you're following an Unwritten Rule in your business: if I'm not getting the results I need it's because I haven't created the right product or service yet.

The unwritten rule above is a problem because it's actually an avoidance technique and due to the amount of time and energy and resources you put into creating a new product - from planning to promoting - you cannot actually put your attention where it needs to be which is on your current products & services.

(in a small number of cases you might actually need to make a product - so always do your due diligence and figure out what's actually driving your decisions.)

So what are the 3 questions you need to ask before creating a new product or service?

1. What existing products and services could I improve or promote instead of creating a new one?

2. Does this product or service address a valuable need for my clients or does it just sound like a good idea?

3. Why do I truly desire to create this new product or service - and is that truly serving me, my clients and my business?

I encourage you to ask all three of these questions and answer them with as much transparency as possible.

Even if your product or service appears simple and small on the outside it will still time, energy, effort and resources that may be better spent elsewhere or at another time.

And that's another thing - just because you might say no now doesn't mean it's a no forever. ALWAYS write down all of your ideas and keep them in a safe place and check them regularly so you will know when it is the right time.

I trust this will serve so many of you out there in business who have fallen into the trap of just making more and then wondering why you still haven't " made it yet" in your business.

I'd love to hear more about your business. Share with me in the comments below what are your current products and services and why you've created them!
